Sydney on Standby

Sydney was the destination for Tim’s birthday this year. Since 2022, when Tim turned 50, we decided we should go away for his birthday every year. I’m grateful that we’ve been able to continue this. This year, however, it was a bit unconventional because there wasn’t the typical planning for our trip to Sydney. I’m normally a planner, down to the activities on what days. But this time, we were spontaneous…EEK! Spontaneous, flexible, patient, use whatever virtue to describe the experience.

One of the perks of being a flight attendant, is the ability to travel standy-by for a relatively small amount (non-rev). We decided to use those benefits for an adventure to Sydney. The only planning this adventure required was making sure I planned for the days off. One of my goals for 2024 was to travel more for leisure. So what a more fitting time than for Tim’s birthday?

Sydney on Stand-By

When we listed for the flight, there were over 100 opens seats on the first flight from San Francisco to Sydney. We knew we’d make it to Sydney regardless. But, we were shooting for seating in United Polaris. Polaris is United Airlines premium international service, which includes lay-down seats, amenity kits, pajamas, and much more. There were only six seats available in the premium cabin. Although Tim and I were numbers five and six on the list, some nerves still set in. Another passenger could decide to upgrade at the last minute. Thankfully, that didn’t happen and we made it in Polaris. The lay-flat seats made the 14+ hour flight a dream!

Sydney is a beautiful city! We stayed at the Marriott at Circular Quay. The location of the hotel is perfect! It was about a 30-minute train ride from the airport. The train system was easy to use and clean! The harbor was about a 5-minute walk from the hotel; the Opera House, a 15-minute walk. This makes for a perfect running route along the harbor. Or, for a longer run, go across the Harbour Bridge.

We’ll be ABSOLUTELY going back to Australia. We want to explore more of Sydney. Tim wants to dive the Great Barrier Reef and I want to explore the Outback. Where should we go next?
