Resolutions…Yay or Nay?

Resolutions or not? It’s the beginning of the year. You know, that time when the calendar tells us to proclaim, “New Year. New Me!” *insert eyeroll* It’s very easy to fall into the trap of a New Year’s resolution. After all, it IS a new year. There’s no shortage of blogs telling that if you want to make a change, now’s the time. Resolutions come on pretty strong, “I’m going to exercise EVERY day this year.” or my weakness, “I won’t order Postmates AT ALL”. Resolutions are cut & dry. So, if you miss one day, you’ve “ruined” it. When this happens, the majority of us think, “Why even bother?”. This leads to disappointment, ultimately quitting because we feel as though we’re not accomplishing anything.

Why S.M.A.R.T. Goals Over Resolutions?

In 2023, I’m setting goals instead of resolutions. The best way to set goals is to use the S.M.A.R.T. method. Using this method, allows us feel accomplished along the way meet said goals. It’s important to feel energized and motivated while achieving our goals, instead of just toiling along and waiting till the finish line to celebrate our wins. This where resolutions differ from goals. With goals, you are working towards something as opposed to just avoiding missing a day.

  • S – Specific: Your goals should be specific. Instead of saying, “I want to get in shape.” Set a clear intention. Try saying, “I want to lose X pounds.” Being vague leaves you without direction you’ll be left not knowing when or if you’ve met your goal.
  • M – Measurable: Set a number clear number. You need to be able to count and see exactly when you’ve met your goal. Ex. “I want to lose 15 lbs.”
  • A – Achievable: The goal needs to be feasible. You can’t expect to weigh 99 lbs if you’re 6 feet tall. There are some things that simply impossible. You need to be aware of what is achievable and what is not.
  • R – Realistic: The goal needs to be realistic. You can’t expect to lose 15 pounds in one week. It’s important to do the research as to what is realistic. Giving yourself an unreasonable timeline will be disappointing when it doesn’t happen.
  • T – Time-Bound: Set a deadline to reach the goal. Having a realistic timeline will help you focus and motivate you to do the work. Without a deadline, you won’t feel the pressure to get things done. Remember, a bit of healthy pressure is helpful and sometimes necessary.

Remember, this method of goal-setting is any aspect of life, not just fitness. Tell me about your 2023. Will you be setting resolutions or goals?
