Quitters Day

Quitters Day sounds like something that we should not be celebrating, but there are some things we should consider quitting. Admittedly, I had never heard of this Quitters Day prior to this year. When I came across it, the phrase piqued my interest. After a quick Google search, I learned that this the day (second Friday in January) when most people abandon their New Year’s resolutions. But if you read my previous post, you’ll know I’m not a fan of resolutions.

I am, however, a fan of quitting. That’s why Quitters Day caught my attention. There are times we need to quit in order to succeed. I will be the first to admit I have a long list of things I need to quit. I’m not talking about habits like drinking or smoking, but things like inconsistency, perfectionism, and insecurity. We all experience these at one time or another.

Right around Quitters Day, my friend, Marshana, recently posted about consistency and the importance of it. She reminded us we just need to do it! It doesn’t matter if it’s not perfect, just keep at it. This struck a chord with me because I’ve always chasing some sort of perfection. At times, I’ve even caught myself thinking, “I can’t do it, if it’s not perfect.” Then my rationale kicks in and I realize I can’t be perfect, if I’m not consistent.

This is where Quitters Day comes in. It’s the perfect time to figure what habits to quit. Sometimes we engage in behaviors or habits we may not even be aware of. Some of the may include:

  • Procrastination: Putting things off may seem like a great idea at the time, especially if we’re busy. But procrastination can cause even greater stress than completing the task itself.
  • Complaining: Venting is often necessary. But once the vent session is done, it’s time to look for the solution.
  • Being Ungrateful: When we set large goals, it’s easy to lose sight of what we have at the moment. When this happens, we need to step and see all we’ve accomplished.
  • Giving Up: Giving up is the easy thing to do. It’s important to remember that no one is great in the beginning.

What will you be letting go of on Quitters Day?
